Srebrenica Genocide: Thirty Years Later

Bosnia Herzegovina | July 2025

In July 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina marked the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, in which 8,372 Bosniak men and boys were killed in July 1995 by Bosnian Serb forces. Three decades later, the consequences of the massacre remain visible, as families continue to bury newly identified remains and gather annually at the Potočari Memorial Cemetery to mourn the dead.

Although the war ended in 1995, approximately 1,000 victims of the Srebrenica genocide are still missing. Their remains are believed to be scattered across multiple mass graves, relocated in an attempt to conceal evidence of the crime. Each anniversary serves not only as a memorial but as a reminder that the process of identification, mourning, and justice is ongoing.

By documenting the 30th anniversary, this project examines how genocide is remembered in the present tense, and how absence, loss, and unresolved grief continue to shape daily life for survivors. The importance of remembering today the costs of genocide, even decades later, is more vital than ever, with the ongoing massacre affecting the Palestinian population in the occupied territories.
